Flower Boy

A portrait inspired by Steve McCurry’s Afghanistan series, this piece captures a young boy in Kabul in the 1990s. The pink flower in his hat reminds us of his innocence, while the hopeful yellow paint cuts through the image. Together, the pink flower and yellow paint contrast with the emotion on the boy’s face and challenge the viewer’s assumptions about boys living in conflict zones. The experiences of young men and boys are often forgotten, and they are frequently dehumanized in portrayals of war. Although all children face increased risks, boys in particular are at higher risk for child labor, armed recruitment, and exposure to violence.
